چکیده

Analysis of the 802.11 CSMA/CA mechanism has received considerable attention recently. Bianchi [1] presents an analytic model under a saturated traffic assumption. Bianchi’s model is accurate, but typical network conditions are nonsaturated and heterogenous. We present an extension of his model to a non-saturated environment. The model’s predictions, validated against simulation, accurately capture many interesting features of non-saturated operation. For example, the model predicts that peak throughput occurs prior to saturation. Our model allows stations to have different traffic arrival rates, enabling us to address the question of fairness between competing flows. Although we use a specific arrival process, it encompasses a wide range interesting traffic types including, in particular, VoIP.

An Improved Analytical Model for IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function under Finite Load

In this paper, an improved analytical model for IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) under finite load is proposed by closely following the specifications given in IEEE 802.11 standard. The model is investigated in terms of channel throughput under perfect and slow Rayleigh fading channels. It is shown that the proposed model gives better insight into the operation of DCF.

A Finite Load Analytical Model for the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function MAC

Abstract— CSMA/CA protocols such as IEEE 802.11b are considered to be attractive MAC protocols for wireless LANs. In this paper, we extend a saturation throughput model for the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) MAC protocol to finite loads. The analytical model can help in the optimization of the protocol parameters as well as leading to the performance modeling of multi-hop a...

Throughput Performance of the Distributed and Point Coordination Functions of an IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN

We study the throughput and delay as a function of load, of data traffic in an IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN using the public domain network simulator ns-2. We evaluate the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) as well as the Point Coordination Function (PCF) modes of operation of IEEE 802.11 in detail. Although the PCF gives consistently higher throughput in the ranges of load studied, it has hig...

A finite-source feedback queueing network as a model for the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function

The most mature medium access control protocol for wireless local area networks is the IEEE 802.11 standard. The primary access mode of this protocol is based on the mechanism of carrier sense multiple access with binary exponential backoff. We develop a finite-source feedback queueing model for this access mode. In this model we derive expressions for the throughput and the first moment of the...
